7 Actions to Perform to Boost Your Mood
I don’t know about you. But sometimes I get those awful days when I feel so, so low. They call it the ‘blues’.
On those days I find it hard to boost my mood. Unless I do something to snap out of it, I end up feeling sorry for myself.
Do you get like that as well when you’re moody?
The thing is, when my mood is low it has a knock-on effect on those closest to me. I get snappy, short-tempered, miserable and easily irritated.
The other bad thing about low moods is that it can affect your self-esteem. You could be the most confident person usually. But when the mood swings sets in, your self-esteem takes a dive.
Did you know that women suffer from mood swings more than men? According to research, we tend to focus too much on our negative moods.
When you feel low, you worry about your mood. And when you worry, it makes your mood worse.
So what can you do to boost your mood? Well, I’ve come up with a list of things. If you try one or two of them, it should help you kick your bad mood to the kerb.
#1. Instead of brooding, take action. When a negative mood starts to overtake you, get up and do something. Clean the house, go shopping, do some gardening or go for a long walk in the park. Surrounding yourself with nature will uplift your spirits. If you have a river nearby, go and sit by it. Throw stones in the water. Watching ripples form in the water will soothe your mind. Distracting your mind will take your focus off your feelings.
#2. Dance to boost your mood. I love dancing. It’s great. Dancing adds to your overall happiness and improves your mood. It produces endorphins. In other words, it releases ‘feel good chemicals’. I go to Zumba dance classes after work. Zumba is made up of mambo, salsa, soca, samba, merengue, reggaeton and other dance moves. Last week I felt tired and a bit low. I wasn’t in the mood for Zumba. My colleagues talked me into going with them. So I went. Guess what? After the short warm up session, my mood naturally lifted. Instead of frowning, I had a big grin on my face. At the end of the class I felt fantastic. I was glad that I went.
#3. Treat yourself. Splash out and spend some of your hard-earned cash on yourself. You’ll feel better for it. Go get your hair done, have a manicure, pedicure, buy yourself some clothes or a box of chocolates. Retail therapy is great for boosting your mood. If you’re broke, pamper yourself instead. Run a warm bubble bath, take a long soak and play some soft music in the background. Don’t forget to light some lovely smelling candles. Place them all around the bathroom. That’s just what the doctor ordered. Lovely!
#4. Eat some mood food. Foods that are rich in Omega-3 oils can boost your mood and fight off depression. Foods from that group are avocado, sardines, olive oils, walnuts, flax seeds and fresh salmon. Drink plenty of water as well. Bananas are high in calming B vitamins. The B6 in bananas controls your blood glucose levels and naturally soothe your mood. Turkey is also a mood lifter. It has tryptophan. That’s an amino acid used by your body to create serotonin.
#5. Exercise and shake off the blues. Like dancing, exercising releases endorphins. It’s best to work out for about 30 minutes to feel the benefits. Apart from boosting your mood, exercising regularly has other health benefits. Exercises reduce blood pressure and protect you against cancer and heart diseases. It’s also great for improving your self-confidence. Plus if you’re trying to lose weight and burn calories, exercising helps.
#6. Team up with a friend who can make you laugh. Have you got a friend that makes you laugh? When your mood is low, arrange to meet. Laughing is a great cure for lifting your mood. I bet you can’t laugh and stay moody. Like dancing and exercising, laughing releases endorphins. I’ve got a friend who I call my ‘laughing partner’. Every time we meet, we end up in fits of giggles. I think it’s because we’ve got the same weird sense of humour. I could be with someone else doing exactly the same thing, and it wouldn’t be funny. But when my friend and I get together, we laugh about the most stupid things. I love spending time with her. She always cheers me up.
#7. Play your favourite music. Listening to music can take you to another time zone. It’s an escape route where you can get lost, in a beautiful way. “If music be the fruit of love, play on.” ~ Shakespeare. Listening to your favourite music makes you feel warm and cosy inside. It’s a wonderful sensation. Music makes you elated, happy and nostalgic. Some music calms your nerves. That’s why relaxing music sends babies to sleep. When your mood is low, put on your favourite music, relax or sing along to it. It will surely boost your mood.
We’re all creatures of moods. One day we’re up. The next, we’re down. But you can change those negative moods. Next time you feel low, try one of these tips. I’m sure it will help to boost your mood.
